At Paramount Grove, we believe some of the richest learning experiences emerge from children's natural curiosity and connection with the world around them.
While exploring the outdoors, the children made an exciting discovery: a praying mantis resting amongst the branches. Drawn in by wonder and curiosity, they gathered together to observe the insect closely, carefully watching how it moved its body and navigated its environment. Demonstrating patience and respect, the children allowed the praying mantis time and space to move at its own pace.
One of the children confidently held out her hand, inviting the praying mantis to step onto it. As it slowly made its way onto her hand, the others watched with fascination, sharing their observations and theories about what they noticed.
They said: "They have spikes on it", "It's dancing, it's like tickly", "It's ticklish on my hand", "It's praying mantis...it's very big".
This spontaneous encounter provided opportunities for the children to strengthen their learning through curiosity, communication, and respect. As they observed and discussed the praying mantis, the children were actively exploring the natural world and making sense of their discoveries. Their willingness to wait patiently for the insect to move demonstrated self-regulation and persistence, while the child's gentle interaction with the praying mantis reflected growing confidence and empathy towards living things.
Moments like these highlight the power of unplanned learning opportunities. By slowing down, observing closely, and engaging with the living world around them, children develop a sense of wonder, respect for nature, and the dispositions that support lifelong learning.
